Overcoming the Lies of Self-Hate
Many of us fall prey to self-hate, believing no one in our lives truly adores us or values our worth. We assume that if no one else cherishes us, then it’s acceptable to dislike ourselves as well. This is a lie from Satan that we should never accept as Christians. James gently reminds us that Jesus "chose to give birth to us by giving us His true word. And we, out of all creation, became His most prized possession" (James 1:18).
What is Jesus' true word for us? "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth" (Psalm 139:13-15).
These scriptures should be rooted in your mind to eliminate self-hate. Our frames were not hidden from Jesus. He made us in secret, weaving every single part of us in the depths of the earth to be perfect creations in His likeness. We might be imperfect due to tragic encounters, but that doesn’t mean we’re useless, unworthy, or not cherished.
What type of adoration should we have toward ourselves? We should think, "I know God cherishes me, so I can love what God adores. I don’t love everything I do, but I acknowledge myself since God acknowledges me. I won’t dismiss what God sees in me. I will love myself because He knitted me together in my mother's womb. I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and I will not allow Satan's lies to penetrate my mind."
What can you do to eliminate self-hate? Let the truth of God’s word confront all the lies of your self-hate. Embrace the fact that you are God’s most prized possession, made perfectly in His image. Acknowledge that your worth is not defined by others or by your past but by God’s love and purpose for you.
In conclusion, overcoming self-hate requires embracing the truth of God’s word and rejecting Satan’s lies. Recognize your worth as God’s cherished creation, fearfully and wonderfully made. When you acknowledge and love yourself as God does, you can eliminate self-hate and live in the fullness of His love.
So, do you believe in your worth as God's most prized possession, or do you fall prey to self-hate?
